Today's Scripture:
Deuteronomy 10:12-22
And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?
To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today. Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer. For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. Fear the Lord your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name. He is the one you praise; he is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes. Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.
Read: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
It reminds me of the strength of the Lord and that all He asks us to do is submit, praise and respect Him. By walking in His footsteps, we are assured of His love. The same love that He provided to my ancestors and will be provide to my children after me. This reassures me that I do not have to complete control over life, as God will provide.
Reflect: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
When I was younger, I thought the idea of fearing the Lord meant to be afraid of upsetting God similar to worrying that I would upset my parents by my behavior or actions. I was worried that my sin would frustrate and upset the Lord. As I grew in my faith over time, I have come to realize that to fear the Lord is to respect God and serve Him with all of my heart. This passage reminds me that God is the Lord of Lords, who is mighty and awesome. I do not need to fear the Lord, as He is my protector and guide, providing for my needs and the needs of my family.
Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
I think this passage is asking me to set my eyes on the Lord, adhering to His commandments and maintain my faith in the Lord's plans and path for my life. I need to remember that is my job to serve and obey our almighty God and rest in the knowledge that He will provide. I merely need to follow His call to serve Him and His church.
