Lenten Devotional 2024

Today's Scripture:

Isaiah 50:4-6 The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.

Read: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
Isaiah 50:4-6 portrays an image of a “suffering servant.” It is often interpreted as a prophetic picture of Jesus Christ’s own sacrificial ministry. It highlights the willingness to suffer hardship and rejection while faithfully delivering God’s message. I should use my words for uplifting and encouraging others, and I should take part in my community of faith with worship, praising God, Bible study and helping others.

Reflect: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
Asking for help is difficult for me. After my husband passed away three years ago, I had to take care of the business side of losing a loved one. Phone calls can be difficult to properly communicate information and there were many phone calls during that time. Some representatives were kind, but most just read from a script and transferred my call to someone else. I became anxious before each phone call, but I learned that when I prayed before them all, I gained confidence. I now remember to pray before a difficult conversation to help me speak with peace and confidence.

Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
I should speak truth with patience, understanding and kindness, listening for God’s voice through prayer and study. I should bear hardships with patience and humility. It works when I remember who I am and WHOSE I am.
