Lenten Devotional 2024

Today's Scripture:

Jeremiah 31:31-34 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Read: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
After reading and reflecting on the Scripture, I interpreted this message as hope for a new promise from the Lord after many disappointments from His people. This covenant that He speaks about in the Scripture is a promise for new beginnings, forgiveness from past mistakes, and future ones as well. The Lord is telling us about His plan for our salvation. He is telling us about Jesus coming to save us from our sins.

Reflect: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
There are two parts of the Scripture that speak to me the most: "I will put my law in their minds. I will write it on their hearts.” And also, "They will not need to say, ‘Know the Lord.’ That’s because everyone will know me. From the least important of them to the most important, all of them will know me,” announces the Lord.” There have been many times throughout my life where I have felt doubt and disconnect from the Lord. Also, many times where choices were made that did not have the Lord or His plan for me in mind. However through these times of struggle and doubt, that is where I have seen His promise shine through. He brought me to Grace not just once, but twice during periods where I had little faith in myself and my ability to feed the minds of my students to become "tiny humans" in Christ. The Lord showed Himself each day through their fearless love, sweet prayers, and tiny but mighty spirits. This led to the next part of His path for me, my current role as a Children's Ministries Associate. To say I had doubt in myself to teach these kids about the Lord, would be an understatement. However, just as He showed me through my students while in the classroom, the Lord showed me what He already promised. He has already put the knowledge of Him into our hearts and minds long before we were ever on this earth. All of the stories and verses I speak to the children about are already inside of them; I am simply just bring them to the surface through Christ's guidance.

Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
This Scripture encourages me to continue my relationship with God, who forgives me when I stumble and lose faith. It pushes me to continue growing my knowledge of Him for not only myself, but for the little ones I minister to on Sundays at Grace Presbyterian Church and Wednesdays at Grace School.
