Lenten Devotional 2024

Today's Scripture:

Psalm 95 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if only you would hear his voice, “Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did. For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

Read: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
This is how I read the psalm: Let us cheer for God because He is the King above all gods! God is the Maker, since He made everything, so we see Him around us, everywhere. God is still good, even when, for 40 years, the ancestors’ kept testing Him, even though they saw what He had done.

Reflect: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
This scripture has a real application for us today. For example, take bullying. Everyone has had a bully at some point, and the bully can “test” you. It’s just like how in this psalm, the ancestors’ kept testing God for 40 years. Can you imagine, if you had a bully bullying you for the next 40 years? It would be stressful! This shows how God would have felt mad and frustrated because of the ancestors’ “testing” him.

Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
In the beginning of Psalm 95, it talks about how we need to “come before him with thanksgiving.” This shows how we should worship at Grace! We need to worship God every day with thanksgiving, and every day we should help one another as Jesus taught us.
