Lenten Devotional 2024

Today's Scripture:

Matthew 16:24-27 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

Read: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
It’s telling me to be more like Jesus and put Him first, before myself. It means sometimes doing the right thing even when it's hard, because following Jesus is more important than anything else in the world. Loving Jesus means loving others, like sharing or being kind.

Reflect: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
We have to put Jesus ahead of ourselves and love others before ourselves too. Like when I want to play with my friends, but my mom asks me to clean up first. Choosing to help my parents, even though I’d rather play, is how I can put other people before myself. Taking turns is how I can put friends first, like when I let another girl be the line leader at gymnastics, even when I wanted to be the leader.

Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
It’s calling me to think more about how to love my friends better, to be generous, and to show Jesus’ love. This week I’m going to try not to get mad at my sister, and if I do, I’ll be quicker to say “I’m sorry.” This week at show and tell, I’m going to share my baby doll with my friend, even if I would rather keep it to myself.
