Lenten Devotional 2024

Today's Scripture:

Psalm 119:9-16 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules[c] of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

Read: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
The writer focuses on how young people can stay on the path to purity, asking the question and answering it himself (seeking and obeying God). However, "obedience" is perhaps an insufficient word to convey what the writer believes: the body of the verses uses words like "praise," "delight," and "rejoice" towards God's laws, suggesting not just obedience, but eagerness to both learn and follow them.

Reflect: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
I'm reaching a more stressful chapter in my college career as I balance multiple things at once, all of them fighting to be the highest priority. I know that many other people are struggling with striking similar balances with their time, but the verses can help us. Their reminder of walking the right path and facing God's laws with eagerness can serve as a compass for us in uncertain situations.

Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
The scripture tells us to face God's laws with eagerness, and Jesus tells us that there is no commandment above loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:28-29). Very simply and broadly put, the scripture asks us to do as Jesus has instructed, and to do so with eagerness.
